How to Handle Rejection on a Date (Gracefully)

Rejection is never fun—but it’s part of dating. Here’s how to handle it gracefully and keep your dignity.
First, don’t take it personally. If a girl says she’s not interested in a second date, it’s not a reflection of your worth. She might have reasons that have nothing to do with you—like she’s not ready to date, or she’s already seeing someone else. Don’t think, “I’m not good enough”—instead, think, “We just weren’t a match, and that’s okay.”
Second, respond politely (don’t get angry or defensive). If she says, “I had a nice time, but I don’t think we’re a match,” respond with, “I appreciate you being honest with me. I had a good time too, and I wish you all the best.” Don’t argue with her (“Why not? We had fun!”) or beg her to give you another chance (“Just one more date—I promise it’ll be better!”). This will only make you look desperate and ruin the positive impression you made.
Third, don’t dwell on it. After the date, don’t spend hours thinking about what you did wrong. Instead, focus on the positive—you had the courage to ask her out, and you got some practice talking to girls. Go do something you enjoy—hang out with friends, watch a movie, or play a game—to take your mind off it.
Fourth, keep an open mind for future dates. Rejection is just one part of dating. Don’t let it stop you from asking other girls out. Remember, every date is a chance to meet someone new and have fun—even if it doesn’t lead to a relationship.
