Movie dates can feel like you’re not “connecting,” but with a little planning, they can be a great way to get closer. Here’s how.
First, let him pick the movie (or compromise). If he’s been talking about a new action movie or a classic sci-fi film, let him choose: “You’ve been hyping up that new superhero movie—let’s go see it this weekend! I’m not usually into action, but I trust your taste.” If you have different preferences, compromise: “I want to see that romantic comedy, but I know you want to see the thriller—how about we see the thriller this time, and I pick the next movie?” It shows you’re willing to meet him halfway.
Second, arrive early to grab snacks (and chat). Get to the theater 15 minutes early so you can stand in line for popcorn (ask him if he wants butter, extra salt—small details matter) and candy. Use the time before the movie starts to talk: “How was your week? Did you finish that project you were working on?” It’s a chance to connect before the lights go down.
Third, don’t be afraid to react during the movie. If it’s a funny scene, laugh—don’t hold it in. If it’s a tense moment, you can lean in a little (if you’re comfortable) or say, “Whoa, that was intense!” quietly. Guys like seeing that you’re engaged, not just sitting there stone-faced. After the movie, ask his opinion: “What did you think of that plot twist? I didn’t see that coming at all!” It keeps the conversation going.
Fourth, add a post-movie activity. Don’t leave right after the credits roll. Suggest going for a walk or getting ice cream: “That movie was fun—want to walk to the ice cream shop down the street? I want to hear more about why you loved that character.” It extends the date and gives you more time to talk—plus, ice cream makes everything better.
