Awkward silences can happen, but they don’t have to ruin the date. Here’s how to keep the conversation flowing naturally.
First, ask about his “why” (not just “what”). Instead of asking “What do you do for work?”, try “What made you want to get into [his job/field]? Do you have a favorite part of it?” Asking about his motivations or feelings makes the conversation deeper than surface-level small talk. For example, if he says he likes hiking, ask “What is it about hiking that you love? Is it the views, or just getting away from the city?”
Second, share funny, relatable stories. Guys love humor—tell a short, silly story about yourself: “Last week, I tried to walk my dog and ended up chasing her around the park because she stole my shoe. Have you ever had a ‘fail’ moment with a pet (or anything else)?” It’s light, it makes him laugh, and it invites him to share his own stories. Avoid long, boring stories—keep it quick and focused on the funny part.
Third, talk about shared experiences (or future ones). If you’ve already done something together (like the coffee date or basketball game), bring it up: “Remember when I missed that basketball shot and the ball went into the bushes? I still laugh thinking about that.” If you haven’t, talk about things you’d like to try: “I’ve always wanted to go to a farmers’ market on a Saturday—do you ever go to those? I heard they have great fresh fruit.” It builds a sense of connection.
Fourth, embrace small silences (they’re normal!). You don’t have to talk nonstop. If there’s a lull, take a sip of your drink, smile, and then say something like, “So, besides [what you were talking about], what do you like to do on weekends when you’re not busy?” Small silences give both of you a chance to breathe, and they don’t have to be awkward—just keep it casual.
