Movie dates can be tricky—you’re sitting in the dark, not talking much—but they can still be a great way to bond. Here’s how to make a movie date with a girl meaningful.
First, let her choose the movie (or compromise). Ask her what kind of movies she likes—comedy, romance, action, or something else. If you have different tastes, compromise: “I love action movies, but I know you like comedies—there’s a new funny action movie coming out. Would you want to see that?” Avoid choosing a movie that’s too scary (unless she loves horror) or too long (over 2.5 hours)—you don’t want her to feel uncomfortable or bored.
Second, arrive early to chat. Get to the theater 15-20 minutes early so you can buy snacks (ask her what she wants—popcorn, candy, a drink) and talk before the movie starts. This is your chance to connect—ask her about her week, or talk about the movie you’re about to see. For example, “I heard this movie has a lot of funny scenes—have you seen any trailers for it?”
Third, keep the focus on her (not just the movie). During the movie, don’t just stare at the screen the whole time. If she laughs, laugh with her. If there’s a sad part, check in with her quietly (but don’t distract her). After the movie, ask her what she thought: “What did you think of the ending? I didn’t see that twist coming!” This shows you care about her opinion and want to talk about the experience together.
Fourth, add a post-movie activity. Don’t end the date right after the movie. Suggest going for a walk, getting ice cream, or grabbing a coffee to talk more about the movie (or other things). For example, “That movie was fun—want to go get some ice cream and talk about it? I want to hear your take on that main character.” This extends the date and gives you more time to connect.
