Awkward silences can ruin a date—but they’re easy to avoid with a little preparation. Here’s how to keep the conversation going with a girl.
First, ask open-ended questions (not yes/no ones). Yes/no questions (like “Do you like traveling?”) can kill the conversation quickly. Instead, ask open-ended questions that make her share more: “What’s the best place you’ve ever traveled to, and why did you love it?” Open-ended questions give her room to talk, and you can follow up with more questions based on her answer.
Second, share stories (but don’t overshare). Stories are a great way to keep the conversation flowing, but make sure they’re short and relevant. For example, if she talks about liking dogs, share a quick story about your friend’s puppy: “My friend just got a golden retriever puppy—he’s so cute, but he chewed up her shoes last week! Have you ever had a pet?” Avoid long, boring stories about yourself, and don’t share personal or sensitive information (like family problems) on the first few dates.
Third, comment on your surroundings. If you’re at a café, talk about the music: “I love this song—do you know who sings it?” If you’re outside, talk about the weather or the scenery: “This park is so pretty—have you been here before?” Commenting on your surroundings is an easy way to start a new topic if the conversation lulls.
Fourth, embrace small silences (they’re okay!). You don’t need to talk nonstop. A few seconds of silence is normal—don’t panic and fill it with random chatter. Instead, smile at her, take a sip of your drink, and then start a new topic. For example, “So, besides [the thing she was talking about earlier], what do you like to do in your free time?” Small silences can actually make the date feel more relaxed, not awkward.
